Light up your space with this handmade star-shaped wooden lamp! It’s made with a jigsaw and a simple lamp socket from the hardware store. It’s fun and easy to create something unique! If you enjoyed our previous post on building a wooden lampshade, you’ll love this new design.

For the DIY lampshade shown, we only need three materials:

  • Wooden board 30×30 cm – 18 mm thick
  • Wooden stick with a 3 mm diameter (e.g., 2x shashlik sticks)
  • Plywood board 60×60 mm – 3 mm thick
  • Wood glue
  • Lamp socket (bauhaus.info)
  • Light bulb LED (bauhaus.info)
  • Textile cables (bauhaus.info)
  • Lampbaldachim (bauhaus.info)
Step-by-step instructions

To build the clock, you can follow these steps

  1. Draw and Prepare the Template

Download the drawing template of the lamp layers from our website. This template includes all the layers you need to cut from a wooden board. Please print it out to scale.

  2. Transfer the Template onto the Wooden Board

Fix the printed template to the wooden board using duct tape to keep it securely in place as you work. Use a knife to trace over the lines, transferring the design to the wooden surface.

  3. Drill Entry Holes for the Jigsaw

To make cutting with a jigsaw easier, drill holes at critical points where cuts begin, especially for interior sections of the lamp. Be sure to add 3.5 mm holes at the corners of the smallest star to help with the sharp radii a jigsaw blade struggles to cut smoothly.

  4. Start Cutting with the Jigsaw

Begin by cutting the slots in each layer, starting at the center and moving outward. This method ensures stability during the cutting process. Follow the lines carefully to create the shape, layer by layer.

  5. Sand the Edges

Once all layers are cut, use sandpaper to smooth out the edges. This will give your lamp a polished look and help the layers fit nicely during assembly.

  6. Prepare the Wooden Sticks

Cut the 3 mm wooden stick into ten pieces, each 30 mm long. These will act as spacers for assembling the lower part of the lamp.

  7. Drill Holes in the Lower Three Layers

To join the lower three layers together, drill five evenly spaced holes in each using a 3.2 mm drill bit. To avoid cracking the wood, incrementally increase the drill size, starting from 1.5 mm and working up to 3.2 mm. Use the template to mark the exact hole positions for consistency.

  8. Assemble the Lower Layers with Wooden Sticks

Join the lower three layers using the prepared wooden sticks. Apply wood glue to secure the sticks into the holes. Use leftover wood as spacers between each layer to ensure the distance between layers is 18 mm. A small piece of plywood can close the gap of the rings resulting from the slot.

  9. Cut a Ring for the Lamp Socket

To properly mount the lamp socket, use the jigsaw to cut a small ring from 3 mm plywood. The ring should have an outer diameter of 60 mm and an inner diameter of 42 mm. This will help create a stable base for attaching the lamp socket.

  10. Attach the Ring to the Star Layer

Glue the plywood ring to the top of the smallest star layer. This will provide a strong point of attachment for the lamp socket later.

  11. Glue Together All Remaining Layers

Starting from the lower assembled layers, glue together all remaining lamp layers. Apply wood glue between each layer to bond them securely and ensure precise alignment.

  12. Assemble the Electrical Components and Install

Attach the cable, lampbaldachim, and lamp socket. Install the lamp socket in the center of your wooden lampshade. Once ready, mount the fixture to your ceiling, and screw in the light bulb.

Your handmade star-shaped wooden lamp is ready to light up your room!
